Tips for choosing the best extendable dog leads
Extendable dog leads can be a great purchase
They give your dog a lot of freedom and mean they won’t hurt themselves if they pull on the leash (as you’re more able to give them some slack).
They’re great leads if you tend to walk in open spaces such as parks or near beaches as your dog can run around a bit while you can keep them secure on the lead.
But, you still need to train your dog to behave when out walking
For more undisciplined dogs, knowing that they can get a bit of slack on their lead might encourage them to pull more. It’s up to you to encourage more positive walking behaviour. You can do this by ensuring your own behaviour is consistent.
For example, you should always shorten the lead to take control of your dog before crossing a road (regardless of how busy the road may be) – this will encourage that behaviour in your dog.
Dogs on extendable leads can be a nightmare for joggers and cyclists
Shorter leads mean that people passing you can easily predict where you and your dog will be positioned, but if your dog can quickly dart across the pavement (dragging across their very own tripwire…), that can cause problems for other path users.
Be conscious of those around you and keep your dog under control and on a short lead when you’re walking on a narrow path.
Multiple dogs on multiple extendable leads is expert territory
If you’re not comfortable controlling a single dog, then consider how difficult multiple dogs will be – particularly if they’re wrapping you up in lengths of their leads!
Learn to walk before you run and get used to walking a single dog before taking on more.

The PHILRON Retractable Dog Lead
If you’ve spent any time researching retractable dog leads, you’ll know there’s not a lot differentiating each different product – they’re all around the same price and have more or less the same design of handle.
We’ve settled on the PHILIRON Retractable Dog Lead as our recommended product as it stands apart from competing dog leads.
Quality and strength are two key areas you want your dog lead to perform and this product doesn’t disappoint on that front. The internal spring is made from Japanese 301 stainless steel which means it continues to perform even with the strongest dog pulling on the lead. The casing is wear resistant and the handle has a comfort, anti-slip grip (great for the nights you have to go out walking in the rain).
And talking about nighttime walking – the reinforced nylon ribbon is not only strong, but is also reflective meaning you and your dog will be easily seen at night.
It’s a good all round product and comes with a free clip on poop bag holder, a roll of poop bags and a collapsible water dish (which can also be attached to the lead). There’s lots of value there for a product that comes in under £20.
A generally well-constructed product, which is great for even larger dogs and it comes with some freebies to sweeten the deal. What more do you want?

Do you have a question about extendable dog leads?
Ask before you buy.
Do any of your leads have an internal compartment for storing bagged dog poo? This would save carrying the bag separately.
Hi Mrs Adams,
Unfortunately none of these ones can (some have bag holders, but nothing to store bagged dog poo). Can’t say I’ve seen a product that does that I’m afraid – I think logistically it wouldn’t be practical (different sizes of dog, volumes of poop, etc) as any product would have to be different sizes to cater for a range of dogs.
Tug do a flexi lead that has a poo bag compartment!
